Of course, there’s a plethora of information out there about this historic city, but just how dog friendly is Barcelona?
Flying to Barcelona with a pet
As you’ll know, Barcelona is hugely accessible by plane from all corners of the world. Direct routes operate from most large cities to El Prat. In fact, El Prat, the main airport in Barcelona, is the 7th busiest airport in Europe, and the 2nd busiest in Spain behind Madrid.
With El Prat being a hub for the Spanish airline Vueling, you can fly to Barcelona with your pet cat or dog in the cabin or cargo hold. Tap Air Portugal, Iberia and Transavia also offer pet flights to Barcelona from various European destinations.
Remember to search for pet friendly hotels and lodgings in Barcelona before booking your flight to make sure you find the perfect place to stay with your pooch.
Things to do in Barcelona with dogs
How about a morning stroll along Passeig de Gràcia searching for other canines to woof a friendly ‘Bon Dia’? Walking in Barcelona in itself is a win-win experience with incredible structures on every corner, so don’t keep La Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera or Casa Batlló all to your self! Your dog will love exploring and navigating a new place and all the stimulation that entails, while you have the pleasure of enjoying the marvellous scenery and atmosphere. Oh, and you’ll also be working off all that tapas and cava. What more can you want for a pet friendly trip?! Of course, dogs can’t go inside the main tourist attractions in Barcelona, but they can admire them from the wide pedestrian boulevards.
Be it Passeig de Grácia, Las Ramblas or Plaça Catalunya, grab an outdoor table in one of the many cafes, and enjoy a spot of people watching with your four legged friend. All six of your legs’ deserve it after all that sightseeing!
Dog Friendly Beaches & Parks in Barcelona
If pounding the pavements isn’t your pooches’ thing, check out the many dog friendly beaches and parks in Barcelona for a doggy heaven day out:
Be aware that if you visit Barcelona between October-April, your canine buddy is welcome on the main beaches. Outside this period, dogs are not permitted due to the number of tourists swarming the sunny shores, along with the non-dog friendly daytime temperatures. But, in 2016, Barcelona City Council opened up Levante Beach (Platja de Llevant) and Les Salines Beach for year round dog access. Now, that’s what you call dog friendly – Barcelona is leading the way in making pet travel a walk in the park!
